Pandemic-Prone Communication
Virtual Communication is here to stay. You better gear up!
The change is here
As the world transitions in to a hopefully post-COVID-19, yet still a pandemic-prone world, it is clear that virtual means of interacting and engaging with people is here to stay.
New regulations like ‘social distancing’ minimizes the opportunity for non-verbal communication, as physical interactions decrease. This calls for effective (even exaggerated) verbal, visual and written communication to balance this deficiency.
Virtual communication will be (if not already so) the new normal, permeating every aspect of human life.
The line between introvert and extrovert will blur, as both groups would need to adapt to new rules of communication in a virtual environment.
Hitting the right note: Under-communicating will not be heard, while over-communicating will be disregarded as noise.
People’s attitude towards communication will shift from “my way” to “the way as needed”, while still retaining their signature style of delivery.
Back to the Basics
This is a simple exercise, handy for most that communicate out of habit rather than deliberate purpose. This is not just applicable to work discussions, but extends itself to even casual personal conversations.

Why do I need to communicate? Communication isn’t just about making sounds, visuals, or words. It's meant to induce a specific effect within the recipient. Realizing this fundamental, is power; and changes the way you see communication.
Quick tip - Respect and treat your words like currency. The rest will figure itself out. -
What do I need to communicate? People will only receive anything as they perceive it, not as you intend. Their perception is the tinted glass through which they see the world, and is a factor of their life experiences and beliefs. It is on us to ensure our message is constructed appropriately to achieve its purpose.
Quick tip - Putting yourself in the recipient’s shoes (aka empathy) helps, a lot! -
How do I communicate? The medium and style of communication is a natural conclusion of the purpose and content of your message.
Quick tip - Content is king! Always choose a medium of delivery appropriate to the message content.
Humans are different, and there is never a one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to communication. But, do not lose heart, for this is as fun as it is important, making it worth your time and attention.
